TAMPA - The first swine flu vaccinations in Hillsborough County schools are scheduled for Tuesday and students at exceptional centers are first in line.
It's a day later than organizers originally announced, but officials needed more time, said health department spokesman Steve Huard.
"We wanted to make sure we had enough time for permission slips to go out and be signed, and to make sure we had enough of the vaccine," he said.
Students at Caminiti and LaVoy exceptional centers were scheduled to start receiving the H1N1 vaccine around 8:30 a.m., school officials said. Willis Peters and Eisenhower exceptional centers will follow.
Lopez exceptional center and D.W. Waters and Simmons career centers are scheduled for vaccinations on Wednesday and, if necessary, Thursday.
Next week, beginning Monday, Oct. 26, health department nurses will vaccinate middle and high school students during school hours. Students at charter and virtual schools, and those being home-schooled and enrolled in adult education can also get vaccinated.
Schools scheduled next week include Freedom, Newsome, Steinbrenner and East Bay high schools and Liberty, Randall, Martinez and Eisenhower middle schools.
On Tuesday and Wednesday. Oct. 27 and 28, elementary students accompanied by their parents or guardians can get vaccinated from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Leto, Jefferson and Armwood high schools, and at Bowers-Whitley Career Center.
All minor and exceptional education students must have a signed permission slip in order to receive the vaccine. Elementary students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia and health department Director Doug Holt said last week that vaccination schedules are subject to change depending on availability of the vaccine and demand.

if the pupils are being given permission slips, then however much pressure and influence is brought to bear upon them they have the automatic right NOT to give permission to be vaccinated
this mean the vaccinations in Tampa county are purely voluntary, therefore your headline is completely wrong.
It sounds like you too are working on your own agenda here. It is bad enough the governments doing this. Can we stick to what is purely factual?
I watch your website with great interest every day and have made a small contribution, so forgive my little criticism please.

You just don't get it do you?
"But WHO said the vaccine is safe! Why don't we just stick to facts? I have such a hard time telling people this is my site when you write things I don't understand!"
Jane knows what she is doing!

Well said. This is not the first time. Speaking personally I am on the side of "no Vaccine" but I find myself having to draw attention to inaccuracies on this site - and then being insulted for doing so. What is going on?
